What’s Best for Her

Man, last week was kind of a Classic Rock dream for me, as I finally got to see not only Aerosmith but also Van Halen live for the first time. And in both cases, I was completely blown away. Both Steven Tyler and David Lee Roth sounded great singing, and if anything Joe Perry and Eddie Van Halen have gotten even better with age. I thought Van Halen’s solos in the studio tracks were awesome – playing live he completely unleashes. I mean, we all know he’s an amazing guitarist, but I guess I never really realized just how amazing a guitarist he is.
This is why “Dad Rock” is in the title of this comic.
If the band is any good, live is always more awesome than recorded. ^^
Sooo, if Rachel is the girl in Girl Pop, I thought she was way more rock than pop. I iz confuzed. O.o
“Dad Rock” and “Girl Pop” are just the genres of music I was listening to the most when I started the comic.
Huh. I didn’t realize they were actual genres. I knew I was behind the times, but I didn’t know that I was Mesozoic. O.o
Well, they aren’t exactly official genres. “Dad Rock” is a diminutive term for “classic rock”, coined by the children of the baby boomers (hence the “dad”). “Girl Pop” may not be a very popular term, but I use it to describe most of today’s top 40 pop hits. The reasoning I guess is that while top 40 stuff is targeted at all sorts of demographics, the main marketing focus (at least for my local radio stations and concerts) seems to tend toward the “women from 15-30” category.
Also I agree on live – it’s mostly always better. My main worry was that they wouldn’t “have it” anymore. I mean, Roth and EVH are both 60. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are almost 70. And yet their voices and guitar playing are as good as ever. Maybe better in the case of Van Halen.
I saw KISS at a huge festival in Canada in the summer of 2009, and to this day it remains the best show I’ve ever been to. I saw then again only a year later at the Minnesota State Fair, and Paul’s voice had gone a long way downhill. It was still a great show, but it was a bit of a bummer. I hope he can rally. I’d love to see them live and on top of their game again.
One of the best if not the best concert I’ve been to so far was one of Deep Purple. And they’re not exactly young themselves.
But then who is still using a Hammond nowadays anyway?
And I guess Elaine does not have enough money on the side to buy the bar herself. Maybe she could make an arrangement?
